Burghfield Sailing Club held its first ever Laser 2000 event on the weekend of 25th and 26th June.

On Saturday a training day run by class coach Helen Phillips saw the 11 participants changing their rig set up, improving their starting, and trying new things out in the gusty conditions.

The first race on Sunday saw the starting practice pay off with a very tight start and plenty of close racing up the first beat in force 2-3 winds. Andrew & Will Sloper led at the first mark from Hayley & Stacey Clark. Leg 4 of the figure of eight course was a very tight reach and Hayley & Stacey managed to hold their genniker, catch Andrew & Will, and then pull clear in the shifty winds on the next beat. Helen & Andrew Phillips fought their way up to second but Andrew & Will managed to regain the position in the last few yards of the race.

Race two was a close tussle between Rebecca Ballard & Margaret Collins and the Clarks. The lead changed hands several times with Rebecca and Margaret quicker upwind, but in the end it was Hayley & Stacey’s quicker downwind speed that gave them victory. Phil & Dave Spicer were third.

Race three was a windward Leeward course. At the first mark Helen and Andrew led from Phil & Dave and Hayley & Stacey. All three boats led at some point during the race but on the third lap Helen & Andrew pulled out a comfortable lead they held to the finish.
