A total of 28 boats took to the water for the first joint K1 and Solo Open, held by TCYC at Coombe Cellars. In addition to the local boats there were 10 visiting K1s and 3 visiting Solos, fleets of 14 boats for each class.
The course for both fleets consisted of a long beat up the estuary into a gusty headwind followed by a downwind course with two gybe marks & back up the river.
Both fleets enjoyed close racing in all three races, with the strong winds in the first race easing off for the last two races until squalls and a colossal downpour soaked the competitors and shore crew alike as the final race was coming to an end.
Three races were sailed, back-to-back, with no discards..
The first three places for the Solo fleet were strongly contested, all on 9pts: On countback 1st place went to Andy Colyer, TCYC. 2nd to James Stevenson, TCVC and 3rd to Bruce Hattersley, Salcombe YC.
The results in the K1 fleet were more clear cut, with John Shimell winning the first two races giving him a clear lead over Eddie Holden from TCYC in second place. Third place in the K1 fleet went to Paul Cunningham also of TCYC.
