Topper Open at Chichester Yacht Club

by Louise Varley 5 Jul 2014 22:26 BST 29 June 2014

This year's Topper Open, moved from its previous date of October, was blessed with sunshine and light breezes, with no repeat of last year's sudden squall which wiped out the entire fleet! With variable wind strengths and some big shifts, it was still a testing day for the young sailors.

31 sailors participated, including 10 from CYC. Others came from as far afield as Oxfordshire and Dorset. 3 of the smaller sailors were using the 4.2 rig.

The first race saw a breakaway group making the most of the light winds and reading the shifts. First over the line was Hugo Burrows, visiting from west Oxfordshire, ahead of Elliott Kuzyk from Parkstone and Emma Crane (RYA). First of the CYC boats was Charlie Elliott in 8th.

In Race 2 Charlie Elliott got up to speed scoring a good first place in front of Elliott Kuzyk and Emma Crane.

Victoria Cowan of Portchester won the 3rd race, with Charlie Elliott in 2nd and Emma Crane 3rd again.

Overall winner was Charlie Elliott, 2nd Elliott Kuzyk and 3rd Hugo Burrows. Second CYC boat was Sophie Kirk in 7th place. First of the 4.2 sailors was Eliza South of CYC.

Thanks to Sailing Solutions and Magic Marine for their support of CYC and the Harbour Series.

Next Open event at CYC is the annual Dinghy Week 25-29 July - enter for the whole event or for separate days.
