Gul Noble Marine Enterprise Masters at Northampton Sailing Club

by Paula Southworth 20 Jun 2014 15:12 BST 14-15 June 2014

Congratulations to our Enterprise Masters Champion Paul Hobson with crew Libby Allen from Bristol Corinthian YC and to our Ladies Masters Champion Alice Allen with crew Sharky also from Bristol Corinthian YC.

Day 1 of this Enterprise Gul / Noble Marine Insurance Masters Championship was reported/tweeted by Matt Velamail who was able to give an excellent account of 'on the water sailing'. Most importantly the Enterprise Association wishes to say a big thank you to the very generous sponsors of this Masters Event. Gul donated excellent sailing clothing prizes to the first six overall and to the 1st Classic Enterprise at the event. Noble Marine gave their usual financial support to this Masters Championship including the Glassware Prizes. This support from Gul and Noble Marine is so much appreciated by the Enterprise Association. It helps the Association to continue to run the National Championships and attract competitors.

The Enterprise Masters has for the last 2 years adopted a 7 race Masters National two-day Championship (4 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday) of shorter duration. This new racing format has proved very popular with the competitors.

Day 2 is reported from the shore and not as dynamic as the Matt Velamail version! The competitors started the last 3 Races with everything to play for and there were several with equal points. At the top of the fleet Overall to Race 4 (Day 1 racing) saw 1st Paul Hobson/Libby Allen with 4 Points, 2nd Mark Lunn/Steve Blackburn with 8 Points, 3rd Phil Ford/Will Allen with 11 Points, 4th Ges Brown and Julie Moore 11 Points 5th Martin Honnor/Abigale Honnor 11 Points and 6th Tim Sadler/Richard Sault 18 Points. The Race Officer gave the competitors good courses and they were sailed in a brisker wind than the Saturday Races. The first two races were back to back followed by a 'coffee break' (luxury for the Masters) – during this break there was much conversation about points needed and if in fact some competitors needed to Race the final race!. There were still some 'close calls' throughout the fleet.

Saturday night competitors and supporters of the fleet enjoyed an excellent Masters Buffett catered for by Elaine Tebbutt and team at Northampton SC. As is tradition some 'dressed to impress' in black tie and Evening suits. It was a lovely supper enjoyed in an excellent atmosphere. This was followed by watching the football for the ardent English supporters. Wonderful evening – thank you Northampton SC.

The Enterprise Gul / Noble Marine Insurance prize giving followed after lunch – sadly and understandably our competitors from Scotland had to leave immediately after racing to face a long journey back to the highlands. In the winner's speech given by Paul Hobson – Northampton was commended for putting on such an excellent event both on and off the water. Paul reported that he travels internationally but this was in amongst the top venues for Sailing and Social. Paul also, on behalf of the Competitors thanked the sponsors Gul and Noble Marine Insurance for their excellent sponsorship for this event. Much appreciated by all.

Prize giving is always a special moment for the Enterprise Association – our prizes are all engraved glassware and Trophies presented on The Enterprise Blue Table Cover which has many flags sewn on from clubs visited. The Enterprise Association also presents additional Prizes to the 6 Overall finishing positions. Here is a list of the prizes presented at this Gul / Noble Marine Enterprise Championship.
