UK J/24 National Championships at the International Paints Poole Regatta

by Rob Clark 4 Jun 2014 14:12 BST 24-26 May 2014

After coming close on several occasions Duncan McCarthy and his team on Madeleine (GBR 4265) have won a deserved 2014 UK National Championship Trophy from Bob Turner (Serco - GBR 4247) and Nick Phillips (Chaotic - GBR 4177). 20 teams signed up for the event, held in Poole bay and blessed with fair sailing and sunshine, everything from 5 to 20 knots of breeze, surf, slop and flat water, ensuring that the teams on top were masters of all conditions.

Each race saw the lead see-saw as the fierce competition pushed teams and kept everyone on their toes with the high standard of sailing leaving no room for error. However by the time each race came to conclusion Madeleine had worked their way into the top places leaving them with an enviable score line counting nothing less than a 3rd place.

As always the Poole J/24 class and Poole Regatta team ran a great show, with beers delivered to competitors as they made their way back in from the race course particularly satisfying for victors and refuelling for the vanquished. Many thanks to all the team who made it a Nationals to remember.

The next J/24 event in the calendar is the Southern Areas to be held as part of the Taittinger Regatta in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight over the weekend of 26/27 July. With a champagne reception, great sailing in the Solent and the infamous 'Towers Party' it's one not to miss. More information on the UK J/24 scene can be found through the facebook group and class website.
