International Paint Poole Regatta - Day 3

by Charlotte Bulloch 27 May 2014 17:14 BST 24-26 May 2014

The last day of the regatta was looking like a disaster with 4 knots of breeze forecast, however, 6-9 knots eventually appeared which gave everyone a chance to attack or consolidate in their respective class.

Ian Atkins in Boats.com did not need to sail the last race having already done enough to win the Regatta Overall and become J70 National Champion. In the J80 class, Patrick Liardet in Aqua J took first place from Phil Taylor in J.A.T. after taking into consideration countback, both were one point ahead of local, Dave Evans in Last Chance.

In IRC 1, Local Harbour Pilot, Jim Macgregor in Premier Flair (Elan 410) finished six points clear of Jackie and Rob Dobson in Jeronimo J133. In IRC 2, the results were turned on their head by Stephen Tiernan who scored two firsts to win the Class, (he was sailing Ruthless loaned to him by the Chairman of the Organising Committee) in second place was the Haven Insurance sponsored Enigma, sailed by Ian Braham. In IRC 3 Richard Freemantle won in his Dehler 29.

The MultiHull National Champion is Phil Cotton who sailed his Seacart 30 Buzz into first place, although this time he did not have it all his own way being chased hard by Nick Wood from Royal Burnham YC in his Farrier 27.

Megan Pascoe won all six races she competed in but that was not enough to take the Tidal National Trophy from Simon Hill (Frensham Pond SC) who beat her by one point!

Poole local, Duncan McCarthy won the J24 Nationals in Madeline with a convincing 13 point victory ahead of Weymouth sailor, Bob Turner in Serco.

Martin Pearson, Chairman of the regatta's organising committee commented: "It's been an exciting and successful regatta with a record number of 181 entries this year. We'd like to thank the sponsor, International Paint who has confirmed support as sponsor for the 2016 Poole Regatta in conjunction with Haven Insurance. We'd also like to extend our thanks to all those involved in helping out with organisation and management of the event from Parkstone Yacht Club, Poole Yacht Club and the Royal Motor Yacht Club. We're very much looking forward to the next regatta!"
