The sun shone, the wind blew (gently) and over 300 visitors took to the water at Draycote Water Sailing Club's Open Day on Saturday 17th May.
The options were Wayfarers, Xenons, a Laser 2000, a Flying Fifteen, a Dart 16, windsurfers and kayaks provided by Rugby Canoe Club who are Associate members of DWSC.
The day was supposed to start at 11am, but people were signing up at 10.45am. It was supposed to finish at 4pm, but the last boat trip stopped at 5pm, and still some people left disappointed. Booking had to be suspended a number of times during the day as the hard working volunteers were overwhelmed by the numbers attending – over 400 visited the Club!
Many had been attracted by the coverage in the local media and the roadside advertisements, but even more had just come to Draycote Water Country Park because of the glorious weather and were greeted by someone offering them an opportunity to try out sailing for free!
Most came off the water with broad grins and three simple words: "That was fantastic!" A number signed up either for membership or training courses and we hope many more will come back to learn more about sailing.
If you were disappointed not to get on the water, we can only apologise. Taster sessions for dinghy sailing or windsurfing can be arranged by phoning 01788 814418 or e-mailing
