Osprey Southern Area Championships at Poole Yacht Club

by P.Frith & D.Withers 15 Jun 2005 08:55 BST 11-12 June 2005

25 boats attended the Southern Area Championships held at Poole.

The first race was led by Jamie Lea/Peter Frith in 1290 Swiftun, followed by Gavin Rose/Steve Birch 1194 and Martin Lewis/Stuart Maunder 1207.

The three boats interplayed for three rounds until Jamie took the lead from Rose, just before the finish. Martin lost out to Laing/Brown 1272 for third.

In the second race a massive wind shift just after the start saw Alan Laing easily 1st at the windward mark with Alex Morcumb and Roger Curran 1296 just behind. Martin 3rd and Jamie back in 6th. Boats sailing high allowed Jamie up to 3rd at the next mark and then 2nd soon after. Alex capsized when his rudder came off his boat. At the windward mark Jamie took the lead from Alan who faded to fourth at the finish with Martin 2nd and Mike Taylor 3rd.

Breezy conditions in the third race saw Jamie and Martin locked in battle until Martin tried to tack too quickly with his crew on the wire. Richard Marshall/Nick Willis 1195 took advantage and finished 2nd with Des Menear & Peter Grieg 1280 coming 3rd.

By the fourth race Lea & Frith with 3 bullets had won the championship. The last race saw Martin, Des & Alan in a close fight for 2nd overall. Des eventually coming out on top with Martin just behind.
