Solo Open at Fishers Green Sailing Club

by Bill Brockbank 7 May 2014 07:20 BST 21 April 2014

Steve Ede (Ardleigh SC) won the Fishers Green Solo Open for the second year running, this time with 3 firsts. Ewan Berkin-Walls (Hunts SC) was second with local sailor (and previous winner) Paul Rayson third.

20 boats turned out despite the unhelpful (light and variable) forecast for the bank holiday weekend Sunday. Race officer James Pearce wanted a good mix of beats, reaches and runs. The wind gods misunderstood him, providing all 3 - but on each leg.

Despite that (and flat spots bigger than Ukraine) racing was closer than expected, with tussles throughout the fleet and 6 boats ending up within 5 points of each other. It helped that James had set temporary marks further from the trees than the static marks, or we might still be racing.
