British International 420 Class Announce World and Junior European Championship Teams

The RYA Youth National Championships, held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from April 14th – 18th, were the final event from which the British 420 Class selected the teams to represent GBR at the 420 Open and Ladies World Championships in Travemunde, Germany in July, and at the 420 Junior European Championships in Gdynia, Poland in August.

The selection process was based on the results from the class Winter Championships (Pwllheli Sailing Club), the Spring Championships (Hayling Island Sailing Club) and the RYA Youth National Championships at WPNSA. Some 26 races were run at the three venues across a wide range of conditions. The teams, announced on the final day of the Youth Championships by the 420 Independent Selection Committee, are as follows:

Open World Championship Team

  • Tim Riley & James Taylor
  • Robbie King & Ryan Orr
  • Max Clapp & Joseph Burns
  • Scott Wallis & Luke Burywood
  • Daniel Whiteley & James Clemetson
  • Josh Voller & Matthew Shorrock
  • Ben Jennings & Marcus Tressler*
(* Ben Hazeldine & Rhos Hawes declined their place and are moving onto the 470 class.)

Ladies World Championship Team

  • Sarah Norbury & Mari Davies
  • Jemima Lawson & Lily Summers
  • Morgan Dibb & Rosie Watkins
  • Milly Pugh & Amy Sparks
  • Jenny Smallwood & Danielle Thomas
  • Jenny Cropley & Emma Baker
  • Joanna Kalderon & Midge Watkins

Junior Europeans Team

  • Tim Riley & James Taylor
  • Robbie King & Ryan Orr
  • Max Clapp & Joseph Burns
  • Sarah Norbury & Mari Davies
  • Jemima Lawson & Lily Summers
  • Morgan Dibb & Rosie Watkins
  • Scott Wallis & Luke Burywood

The class wishes the teams all the best in their international competitions, and thank the many people involved in running the events and selection process.

The class has an exciting summer programme to look forward to, despite the focus on school exams being a priority for most sailors (and parents). Our younger 420 sailors are now able to take advantage of the new Garmin series, plus there's the RYA high performance and TT training and various club events too. From late June there are several popular international regattas which are open to all in the class and well supported by our GBR sailors, namely Kieler Woche, Flanders Youth Regatta and the French Nationals which are likely to be RYA coach supported. Several domestic events are being held in July and August in Chichester Harbour leading up to our National Championships at Hayling Island Sailing Club in late August.
