ROPE OFFER STARTS & TUNING BEGINS!

It’s been a very busy week but I have found the time to check over the mast alignment on the B14, an area of absolute importance in tuning a mast.

So where to start?

Make sure the boat is level as this will be required during the later steps of this process. Measure to make sure the forestay is central on the deck as everything works back from this, from here you can then measure to make sure the shrouds are equidistance from the forestay point. This is important so that so that your spreader deflections when set square to the chain plates are actually getting you the same characteristics on both tacks. Once you are happy with this you need to find the centre point of the stern, measure from the corners of the deck, never assume the rudder fittings are exact.

A straight line between the forestay point and centre of the stern will give you the centreline of the boat. It is worth checking at this point that the shrouds are equidistance from this line. The centreline of the deck and gate need to be in line with and running exactly parallel to the centreline of the boat. If this isn’t achieved you will be going in circles to get the rig to be square and you won’t have even bend characteristics on both tacks. Traditionally a plumb line is used to check this but I use a laser as it gives a clear reference at all heights and is more accurate. Once you are happy that all these measurements are correct you can be confident that when it comes to putting the mast in the boat you will need to set the correct rake, tension and pre-bend with the spreaders square but the work here will make this process a lot easier.

I think this is the part of boat preparation and rig tuning that often gets over looked or ignored. To be competitive at the front end of the fleet you have to leave nothing to chance and areas like this and preparing the boat and rig accurately are the jobs which make the difference and convert to better speed on the race course. Unfortunately admitting that something doesn’t measure correctly on the deck can take some fixing but is a necessary part of tuning your boat.

P&B South offer a boat tuning and preparation service, for more information contact Ben on 01489 577748.
