Spring Bank Open Regatta at West Riding Sailing Club

by John Gledhill 2 Jun 2005 09:16 BST 28-30 May 2005

Both heavy weather revellers and light air strategists were catered for in WRSC’s Spring Bank Regatta held over three fun filled days of the Bank Holiday Weekend. Saturday’s forecast of 25mph winds was met in full and many preferred to watch the “experts” from the safety of the shore. They were not disappointed, the carnage was impressive and some craft had to be temporarily abandoned while personal safety was secured elsewhere.

Sunday was better behaved and numbers sailing doubled, although the odd remnant of Saturday’s blast kept everyone honest. Monday dawned to a flat calm but race officer Hamish Gledhill shrewdly postponed for an hour enabling competitors to enjoy a shifty breeze that increased to planing strength in the afternoon. All seven races were completed with five to count.

The Enterprise event was part of the Cock o’ the North series. Tim Sadler and Richard Sault won the last race by a couple of boat lengths from Paul Hobson and Jeannette Hunt. Jonathan Gledhill (Solo), Mike Holmes (Albacore), and Tim Keighley (Laser) took five wins in their respective classes. The Swordfish, competing for the White Rose Bowl, scrapped hard with Ted Farrance and Julie Tree winning for the second year running.
