by Fabio Colivicchi 23 Jan 2014 14:45 GMT 21-26 August 2014

More than 300 boats and 3,000 sailors with a passion for offshore sailing have taken part in the Palermo- Montecarlo race over the last 9 years. This year they are celebrating the 10th Palermo-Montecarlo Regatta, bringing together a love of the sea and sailing with many new features for this special anniversary event.

Start on 21st August

The start from Palermo has been moved forward this year: the 10th Palermo-Montecarlo takes off on Thursday August 21. The change is designed to meet the needs of owners and crews engaged in the busy schedule of offshore sailing, ensuring that both superyachts and the more traditional cruiser racers can take part.

The Race Director Alfredo Ricci gives detail on the course: "The starting signal, weather permitting, will be given at 12.00 on August 21 in the Gulf of Mondello in front of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia. The yachts will sail towards the flying gate of Porto Cervo, confirmed for this 10th edition. Through the gate, competitors may decide to leave Corsica to port or starboard and head towards the finish in Monaco."

Palermo-Montecarlo X 2: A new challenge

By popular demand there will be a new race for this 10th anniversary event. The opening of the "Palermo-Montecarlo X 2" race is in response to many owners for a new challenge, and the organizing committee immediately seized the opportunity to create this trophy which adds even more excitement and prestige to the regatta.

Finish in Montecarlo

The finishing line in front of Port Hercule in the Principality of Monaco, already very spectacular, is enriched with expectations and prestige: the scenario of the quayside that will moor yachts coming in, the shoreside activities, the media, the sponsors and the evening of the award ceremony of the 10th Palermo-Montecarlo, will be that of the new clubhouse of the Yacht Club de Monaco. A symbolic building, a cathedral of yachting, designed by Sir Norman Foster, which will be inaugurated shortly before the race.

Trophies

The Trophy Angelo Randazzo, a perpetual challenge in honour of the founder of the race and President of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia (1992-2008), will be awarded to the winning yacht on corrected time in the largest category (ORC or IRC).

The Trophy Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita', established in honour of the founder of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, will be awarded to the first yacht crossing the finishing line in Montecarlo in elapsed time.
