by Simon Keijzer 18 Dec 2013 20:30 GMT 17 December 2013

The Royal Dutch Yachting Union has learned of the death of Conny van Rietschoten. At the age of 87 years, Conny van Rietschoten passed away on 17th December 2013 at his residence in Portugal. Conny van Rietschoten had been struggling with poor health for some time.

Conny van Rietschoten is one of the greatest sailing legends in Dutch history. He won the Whitbread Round the World Race twice, in 1978 and 1982, ensuring that the Netherlands became one of the more prominent nations in ocean sailing. He was the first Dutchman to professionalize sailing, and lifted the sport internationally to a higher level.

The Royal Dutch Yachting Union mourns the loss of one of the greatest Dutch sailors in history and gives a moment of thought to the great loss that his family, friends and loved ones shall bear.

Ever since 1982 the most prestigious trophy in Dutch sailing is awarded in Van Rietschoten his name.

Jan Berent Heukensveldt Jansen, President of the Union said: "We mourn the loss of Conny van Rietschoten as a legendary sailor. Van Rietschoten will remain a role model for all of us who are running world class sailing programs. He inspired many sailors around the world with his desire for quality and his perseverance."
