RS Tera Parents Regatta at Hayling Island Sailing Club

The first RS Tera Parents Regatta took place at Hayling Island Sailing Club on Saturday 7th December in very light and fickle conditions. Whilst the children were training it was time for the parents to get out on the water and have some fun in the fleet of RS Ventures owned by HISC.

With twenty sailors, they were split into groups of 3 or 4 per boat and took to the water for the first race of the day, which proved to be a battle of wits against a strong tide and a dying breeze.

The start was interesting with the Who Ate All The Pyes team racing off the start line down tide early and battling to get back whilst the rest of the fleet shot off into the distance. At the first mark it was Keiths Willing Helpers followed closely by Allys Bongos.

On the run across the harbour, tactics, luck and knowing which mark to go round were key, bringing the fleet back together for a tactical beat against the tide in a very light breeze.

It was clear that some hadn't listened at the briefing as the next mark was missed by Daves Magic Roundabout (lots of penalty turns for this crew), Jo's Tribe joined back in with the racing half way up the beat having missed the start by a bit.

In the end the race was taken by Who Ate All The Pyes, followed by Keiths Willing Helpers and Mikes Marvels.

After lunch another two short races were held in front of the clubhouse with all crews providing some close racing, some interesting tactical decisions and in some cases dubious interpretations of the rules.

Race 2 and 3 were won by Who Ate All The Pyes, meaning a clean sweep, despite being over the line again in race 3, in race 2 Jo's Tribe took a brilliant 2nd place, followed by Keiths Willing Helpers, race 3 saw Allys Bongos take 2nd, with Mikes Marvels in 3rd...and as for Daves Magic Roundabout, please see comments earlier in this report.

A fantastic time was had by all, as could be seen on Sunday morning with a few, actually quite a lot of very 'tired' parents who had spent the evening reliving their experiences of the day's racing.

Next stop for the RS Tera National Squad at Oxford Sailing Club in February – wonder what we can do to challenge the parents there?

Oh, and the children had a good weekend too.
