Troia Portugal Match Cup 2013 - Day 4

by Ana Lima 18 Nov 2013 19:38 GMT 14-17 November 2013

Álvaro Marinho is the grand winner of Troia Portugal Match Cup 2013, becoming the first Portuguese sailor to win this sailing competition. The Portuguese skipper managed to overcome the Frenchman Pierre-Antoine Morvan in the final.

After a hard day for all the finalists, with wind shifts and some changes in the track, the title of winner was delivered to Álvaro Marinho, the helmsman who summed a larger number of points throughout the last day of the competition. After leaving behind, in the semifinals, Arthur Herreman, the Portuguese crew faced Pierre-Antoine Morvan (12nd in the World Ranking), who until today was the sailor with the most victories. Marinho was able to overcome the Frenchman Morvan, with three race wins.

Álvaro Marinho, Winning skipper:
"I'm very happy! It was a great come back, we were away from Match Racing for some time and we had quite a strong adversary, Morvan, is an excellent sailor, once the 3rd best in the world. I believe we equaled the amount of wins and that was the most important thing. I have to highlight my teams' work, we had excellent regattas and we were evolving day by day, taking advantage of our experience and overcoming the initial mistakes, which come naturally due to little rotativity. It was a very hard day, the conditions were always unstable, but we took advantage of starting first and making the best decisions, which allowed us to win enough advantage to conquer the trophy and become the first Portuguese crew to win Portugal Match Cup."

Pierre-Antoine Morvan, skipper:
"They were much disputed regattas throughout these three days. We had all types of wind which allowed us to have good propel. In this final with Marinho where, due to wind jumps, we only completed one regatta, we did three fatal mistakes in the pre-start, we got stuck in the marker which lost us the first position. In no way did we manage to regain advantage and Marinho sailed very well. Independently from the results they were awesome regattas, Troia has a good water track, the organization was flawless, we want to return next year."

In the fight for the 3rd and 4th places, Diogo Pereira (representing Pedro Rebelo de Andrade) and Arthur Herreman did one only "knock-out" regatta, where the Frenchman beat the Portuguese skipper, achieving thus the last place in the podium. In the regattas which determine the 5th and 6th places, Bernardo Freitas lost to Afonso Leite.

After four days of intensive competition the promoters of "Troia Portugal Match Cup", as well as the Sponsors of the event give a high positive note to the event that brought to Troia big names of the national and international sailing scene.

With the goal to place Troia's Peninsula in the center of attention, the TPMC organization joined all necessary conditions to make this Match Racing event, a happening of great relevance at the sportive, economic and touristic level.

Sá Machado, CEO of We Sail and Troia Portugal Match Cup:
"We did all that was possible with our current resources, we dinamized the competition to the maximum extent, we set a new cycle, using Troiamarina as a base station, giving the possible return on investment to this beautiful Peninsula, we worked with our partners to have the best competition. We highlight the joy of all crews that took advantage of the space to the fullest, enjoyed this beautiful bay, the conditions were ideal and they left happy with their participation. It was the first time that a Portuguese crew came out winner of Portugal Match Cup and that is excellent for us to keep on working towards the promotion of the sport of Sailing in Portugal. We Sail is a new project connected with sailing, partner with Troiaresort and a company that does corporate coaching, giving sailing starter lessons in class and applying those teachings in a practical environment the next day, using our boats. It's a new team building concept which works on the professional's team spirit, encouraging them towards new challenges".

Eng. João Madeira, Troiaresort Director:
"This is a very interesting competition for Troia, as soon as we had the chance to bring it back to Troia we didn't hesitate. Our goal, since the begining is to make Troia an internationally known spot and this event builds on that, meeting two essential points: the first one is that it takes place outside of the high season and the second one is to bring international clients. The third vector is the fact that We Sail brought their work base here to Troiamarina. For us it comes as very positive to join two companies that focus on such an interesting product, such is this type of event. We have the perfect ensemble, we can and we will do many great things here in Troia."
