Gulari/Outteridge battle rages as US racers take two of top three spots

Light to moderate trade winds swept Kaneohe Bay Hawaii today, allowing four spectacular races in the postcard-perfect conditions Hawaii is known for for the 3rd day of the 2013 McConaghy + McDougall International Moth World Championship. 2009 Moth World Champion Bora Gulari took advantage of a weaker performance from Nathan Outteridge today, blasting ahead of the 2011 World Champ by a five point margin. Florida's Brad Funk closed to within 8 points of Outteridge to round out the top 3.

Today's high-speed action meant plenty of breakages, collisions, and general carnage on the course; we'll publish the Moth Worlds team's more detailed news release later, along with today's video highlight, and the winner of the $1000 Velocitek "Dash For Cash".

Update from Ben Paton:

Interesting day today, winds 6-14 knots. In race 4 I got pinned out on the start and underplayed the top mark on both laps to cross the finish line in 16th. Race 5 was a disaster for me - I had an OK start and tacked before the lay line to play it safe with logic not paying off, I sailed it would seem on headers the whole upwind, oops... Finished in 23rd. In race 6 I had a good start coming in from 20 seconds back and hunting down the line to find a nice gap and sailed up the middle on some good shifts to lead for lap 1. A big mistake at the leeward gate pushed me down to 6th.

Race 7 I started fast on the starboard boat and tacked as I was on a huge header and played the right side of the course to lead at mark 1. I managed to take leverage on the shifts to have a comfortable lead at the next top mark. With the last lap to go I had to work hard as the fleet split either side of me and I had to choose who to cover. I lead by one boat length to Scott Babbage who managed to get his gybe into pressure before me and likewise 3rd place meaning I lost them to a tight finish in 3rd.

Currently still in 6th overall. Happy to be leading races in such a top class. Body is broken now!
