30th Anniversary J/22 World Championships at Sail Newport - Day 2

by Christopher E. Howell 3 Oct 2013 08:31 BST 30 September 2013

Allan Terhune leads the pack

Allan Terhune of Arnold, MD upheld his lead as three spectacular races were completed on day two of the J/22 World Championship, sponsored by Fidelity Investments. Including the crew of Katie Terhune, Kristine Wake and Marcus Eagan, Dazzler has compiled a line of 1,2,3,(9),2 in the five races completed thus far, with the throw-out race now taking effect. Terhune has totaled just eight overall points, six ahead of Benz Faget's Fats and ten in front of Chris Doyle's The Jug 4 1. Hosted by Sail Newport, the five-day event marks the 30th anniversary of the J/22.

Wednesday dawned with promising winds, and when Brad Julian on ThreeDories.com began the day with a triumph in Race 3 of the Championship, winds were about 10-12 knots with a light chop. Legends Regatta winner Lars Hansen on OldsKool came in second and Terhune third. By the next battle, the breeze piped up to 16-20 knots with an increased chop. Faget took the bullet in that contest, with local Will Welles' Cougar and Hansen following. Winds backed off slightly in the final contest of the day when Chris Doyle's The Jug 4 1 collected the victory. Terhune took second, and Faget third.

Racing continues through Saturday for the 71 teams from Canada, the Cayman Islands, South Africa and the USA. Complete results, regatta information and live racing updates are available at www.j22worlds.com.
