Vintage Merlins race in the DeMay series at Hunts Sailing Club

by Mike Liggett 4 Sep 2013 19:15 BST 25 August 2013

A total of 11 Merlins from as far away as the west country and Lancashire assembled for the DeMay qualifying meeting at Hunts Sailing Club on 25 August, held in conjunction with the CVRDA National Rally, however only 10 boats took to the water.

The weather was perfect with a light north easterly wind, though at times flukey and freshening during the day. Full use was made of the lake with two beats and opportunities for using the spinnaker on the off-wind legs, however only the more modern boats took advantage of the extra sail. A total of three races were sailed.

"Keto" 799 (ex. Mervyn Allen now sailed by Roger Devereux) was going very fast and won overall on handicap. It was great opportunity to see both "Kate" 1 and "Gently" 16 on the water helmed by Mervyn Allen and Chris Barlow respectively. Following the racing and prize giving an excellent BBQ was enjoyed by those who did not have to hurry home.
