Sailors at Hollowell SC pay tribute to Don Howard
The Bank Holiday started early for sailors at Hollowell Sailing Club. The sailing weekend kicked off in glorious sunshine with the annual pyjama race on Friday evening. This preceded the main event of the weekend, the Don Howard Trophy.
Don Howard is one of the founding members of Hollowell Sailing Club from 1966. The event is held annually in tribute to him and always results in a big turnout. In total over 40 boats and a few sailboards took part across the 2 days in 5 half pursuits.
Ian Clarke in a Laser and Paul Mallard on a sailboard won races 1 and 2 respectively on Day 1. However Day 2 was completely dominated by young Lawrence Creaser who won all 3 races in his Laser. This was despite some fierce competition from Ian Clarke, Martin Hudson, Keith Lancaster and Simon Deeks.
After the 5 races were run, the overall winner of the trophy went to Lawrence Creaser. Runner was Ian Clarke and Keith Lancaster claimed third position on the podium.
On the Monday, the club held the Bank Holiday Youth Regatta. This saw youngsters of all abilities and ages competing in one of four categories – Elites, Youth Squad, Intermediates and Swallows. Prizes were awarded to individuals who won their category.
This coming weekend marks the start of the Autumn Series, however some sailors will be away competing in the Warwick Trophy at Pitsford.
