by Christopher E. Howell 17 Aug 2013 21:52 BST 1-5 October 2013

Sixty-five teams from the U.S, Canada, England, South Africa and the Cayman Islands have already signed up to be a part of history at the 30th Anniversary J/22 World Championship presented by Fidelity Investments® scheduled for October 1-5, 2013 in Newport, Rhode Island.

Hosted by Sail Newport, many special events are planned in honor of the World Championship and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the boat. Along with Presenting Sponsor Fidelity Investments®, other sponsors have joined including Waterline Systems, J Boats, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel, Gosling's Dark and Stormy® and the Rhode Island State Yachting Committee.

The World Championship will be sailed on the same waters as the America's Cup, several Olympic Trials, J Class Championships and many world championships. Newport is a world-class historical and modern sailing capital known for its spectacular and challenging sailing conditions.

A Legends Regatta on Monday afternoon, September 30 will reunite past champions as well as noteworthy J/22 sailors who have been members of the Class during its long history. After racing, the Legends sailors will join the opening ceremony on Monday evening to launch the World Championship week.

Sail Newport Executive Director Brad Read says, "The October championship will showcase exciting racing and most likely a myriad of sailing conditions. The competition will be very tight."

In addition to five days of racing in Newport, Rhode Island, competitors will also enjoy the shore side social events.

Preliminary Social Schedule

  • Monday, September 30: Legends Regatta, Practice Race, Opening reception at 1800 with appetizers and cocktails.
  • Tuesday, October 1: An after-race social will greet sailors with complimentary chowder and beer.
  • Wednesday, October 2: A night on the town in Newport with specials offered by local establishments for J/22 crews.
  • Thursday, October 3: Sail Newport-hosted casual dinner.
  • Saturday, October 5: Awards ceremony immediately following racing with hearty appetizers and cocktails.
Additional social wristbands will be available at the event for guests and families.

Registration is open until September 15, but the early deadline is August 14 to save $125. For further information, visit the World Championship website: www.j22worlds.com.
