The thermometers soared in Berkshire earlier this month as racing crews were welcomed by club manager Pat Forbes and the eager volunteers at Burghfield Sailing Club to take part in the latest Access Open Traveller Trophy.

The fleet of competitors off-loaded, signed-in and were rigged by 1015hrs in time for the racing brief from Simon Smith in the shade of the club balcony. As in previous competitions, a simple 3-mark course was introduced followed by a short brief on hoist arrangements. The course was a simple triangular shape with the club's committee boat marking the start and finish line.

The calm to light-air provided just enough wind to get the competition under way and around the marker buoys for the morning's two races. The biggest fleet was the 303s with nine one-person, three two-person dinghies; three in the Liberty and three in the 2.3s. In the 303 one-person class the morning's races were taken by Tessa Watkiss closely followed by Monique Foster both from Frensham Pond. The Access Liberty class was won by David Durston (Whitefriars), followed by Vince Barton (New Forest). The Access 2.3 class saw skillful sailing by 'Cock of Burghfield' winner Martin Stone take two firsts and Frensham Pond's Lindsay Burns taking second.

Despite the keen return to the water after lunch and after much deliberation, the racing officer declared the afternoon race as abandoned due to the poor wind conditions and everyone returned to the jetty disappointed.

Engraved tumblers were presented to the winners by the club's Rear Commodore Sailing-Rob Martin. On behalf of all the competitors, Peter Etherton thanked Burghfield sailing club and its volunteers (Sue for dealing with registrations and results; Race Officers – Andrew, Simon and Chris for setting courses; Safety boat teams – David, Tim, Steve, Ian, Jay, Tudor, Ivor, Heike, Bruce, Peter, and Eric; Hoist – Alan, Trudie and John; Kris, Justina and the galley team; Sue, Mari and Pat for providing the excellent cakes at the end of an exhausting day and finally Alex and Trudie for photographing the event) for hosting the successful event despite the fickle wind conditions.
