21-26 July 2013
The Allen RS Feva World Championships are go for 2013 between 21-26 July. Championship racing starts on Monday 22 July with last races and prize giving on Friday 26th. The world and his dog (well 173 RS Fevas, 346 sailors, 1 zillion parents and other supporters) are descending on Marina di Grosseto later this week. The venue has been well tested with the F18 Worlds which finished there last week, so all systems are go. Updates and photos will be available daily, hopefully with on the water updates as well via the Class Worlds website at rsfevaworlds.org. The Twitter feed is at #rsfevaworlds. Full manufacturer support will be available on site.
The reigning World Champions, Leonardo Stocchero & Gianluca Virgenti, are back to try and become the first to successfully defend their title (no pressure there then!). The question is whether home advantage will be significant. If they do manage a successful defence then they will have deserved every plaudit they get.
Arranged against them is the might of the UK RYA Junior squad programme and the ever improving challenge from Holland. The Czechs in their first full season of RS Feva sailing are bringing perhaps largest percentage of their home fleet and will be hoping to make a dent on the overall results.
In fact there will be 14 nations present (CAN,CZE,EST, GBR, GER, IRL, ITA, LTU, MLT, NED, NOR, RUS, SWE, SUI. And that is not to have mentioned their home grown competition yet! Brilliant sailors that they are they haven't had results all their own this year so far.
Racing will be in 3 fleets for the first 2 days (re-fleeting for day 2 based on day 1 results), and thereafter in Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets to decide the choccies. The competition to come is mouthwatering.
And that last brings us to... well all the other things that Tuscany is famous for to keep the 'Rents and others happy. Things like the mega beach, kitesurf school, daily seabreeze averaging 12kts (so it peaks later in the afternoon quite nicely), the cycling, the restaurants and the drinks! Fingers crossed for a blissful week!
