The beautiful weather at the weekend was not welcomed by the organisers of the Sea Cadets Sailing Regatta held in Barry Docks on Sunday July 7th Extremely light winds made sailing extremely taxing and the Sea Cadets, who had travelled from all over the South Wales District to take part in the event, demonstrated great skill in coaxing any movement from the boats.

Sub Lieutenant (SCC) William D. Elliott RNR said "The weather made sailing very difficult and I would like to congratulate all the sailors who showed great perseverance and skill throughout the day. It was fantastic to watch the boats going around the course despite there appearing to be no wind. I also thank the staff members for giving up such a lovely day to bring the youngsters to Barry so that they could compete."

Despite the weather, it was possible to run a curtailed programme of three races and to determine the crews who will represent South Wales at the Area Regatta to be held in Portsmouth at the end of August.

The Bosun class was won by Cadets Kent and Kent from Torfaen Unit with Lockyer and Salmoni coming second.

Honours in the Junior Topper Class were shared between Naylor of Barry and Jones from Penarth. In the Open Pico Class Cadet Bowers from Cardiff won with Rees of Newport came second.

Finally the PY Handicap Class was won by Cheeseman from Porthcawl in a Topper dinghy with Campbell and Platts of Barry coming second in a Wayfarer dinghy.

The Overall Trophy for the regatta went to the Barry Unit with 86pts, second was Newport on 56pts and third Penarth with 53pts.
