Hobies at the Carnac Eurocat

by Louise Allen 3 May 2005 18:39 BST 29 April - 2 May 2005

Light winds plagued Eurocat in Carnac this year with the whole of Friday's racing cancelled due to fog and no wind. There was just enough wind on Saturday for class racing in the bay and plenty out at sea for the 'Grand Raid'. For many of the youth sailors this was their first 'Raid' or long distance race, and with 299 starters it was an awe-inspiring sight. Drew and Chris Tayler were the first Tiger home in a fantastic 26th place with Simon Kearns and Ben Burns close behind in 30th. Sam Newton and Nick Tayler on the Hobie 16 were the second H16 over the line in an excellent 112th overall.

In the class regatta, Sam and Nick were 10th in the H16 Youth class, with Luke Butler and Katie England 18th out of 31 boats. The Hobie Dragoons were well represented by GBR with 5 crews out of 29 in the C3 Handicap Class. Both Adam Butler/Robert Moore and Fay Ridyard/Tom Allen scored race wins on Sunday to give them 3rd and 4th respectively, the top 2 junior crews. RYA coach Marcus Lynch was 'delighted' with their performance in the experienced and competitive field.

Also delighted with their performance were Ryan and Lewis Crawford who came 12th out of 145 in the F18 class, sailing a Hobie Tiger and Simon Kearns and Ben Burns who were 16th.

Needless to say, a wonderful experience for cat sailors who rarely get to experience racing in such huge fleets at home.
