North Sails 3Di on the Solent
Since 3Di was introduced in 2007 North Sails designers and engineers have been developing the product to what is now the lowest stretch, most durable sail in the world.
Over the last few years 3Di has proven its self in the world's toughest environments with the top 5 boats in the Volvo Ocean Race and top 3 boats in the Vendee Globe all using 3di sails. In Grand Prix Racing 3Di is the sail of choice for the winning teams in both the TP52 World Championships and Melges 32 World Championships. Now in 2013 more and more regatta sailors are enjoying the shape holding and longevity offered by 3Di and the results if you were on the water during the Warsash Spring Series you may have seen the new "grey" 3Di in the J/109 class, 45 Foot Class, IRC1 and J/111.
Ever since the J/109 was launched in the UK, North Sails has been committed to developing fast, easy to trim sails, now with the benefit of 3Di construction North Sails have produced J/109 headsails with greater wind ranges and fantastic durability. During the Spring Championships North Sails' James Knight had the pleasure of sailing with William Edwards and team on 'Sardonyx IX' for the first of the weekends, they were using a brand new 3Di No1 headsail that proved lightening quick between 5 and 15 knots. James commented: "the shape holding of the new No1 was better than any headsail I have ever used on the J/109, the ability to use the sail up range when other boats were changing to their No2s was a big advantage to us". Paul Griffiths' 'Jagerbomb' sustained damage on the first Sunday of the champs but until then was looking very fast with his new 3Di No2 headsail, as was Tony Dickin's 'Jubilee', keep an eye out for these boats later in the season.
Meanwhile in the 45 Foot class, North Sails' Frank Gerber was sailing with Stewart Whitehead on board 'Rebel' with their new 3Di Code 2 Jib and 3Di Code 3 Jib, they had a great weekend scoring 4 bullets and 2 seconds comfortably winning the Spring Championships.
Elsewhere on the race course Jamie Arnell and team on board J/111 'Jeez Louise' (including Mike Henning and Kelvin Matthews from North Sails) had a great regatta with their new full inventory of 3Di upwind sails. Jamie commented: "I am delighted with the new 3Di sails, the design team have done a great job."
