Marine electronics company Raymarine, has donated navigation equipment to the Portsmouth based Meridian Trust Association, for use on board its boat Bulldog Trust, which will be touring the Baltic in August with 14 disadvantaged children - seven from the Portsmouth area and seven from Holland.
The Meridian Trust Association runs sailing courses for disadvantaged youngsters, and Bulldog Trust, a 72ft Ketch, will set off for the Baltic in early August. They are expected to be at sea for a month, and whilst on board will learn seamanship skills, as well as life building and team building skills in a safe environment.
The navigation equipment installed includes an RL70CRC pathfinder radar display, and for positioning accuracy a Raystar 120 GPS receiver. Raymarine equipment was selected following a recommendation by Alan Priddy, whose historic boat Lively Lady is also looked after by the Meridian Trust Association.
Tony Weeks, Director of the Meridian Trust Association, says, “Giving young disadvantaged children a focused activity, such as sailing, helps teach them valuable new skills, and working together in a team helps develop social skills. In addition to the encouragement offered, it gives these youngsters something interesting to do and hopefully keeps them off the streets.”
He adds, “Many of these young people are excluded from school and understanding complex technicalities can be challenging. Having an up-to-date navigation station on board makes it easier to demonstrate and explain all about electronic charting to the youngsters”.
Following its return from the Baltic, the Bulldog Trust will sail round Great Britain in support of the Kidney Transplant Association, from 1 September to 14 October 2005.
Raymarine is chosen by skippers and crew who depend on its reliability, performance and accuracy, in even the most severe and isolated conditions. It offers the latest in navigation technology, and yet is designed to be ‘simple on the outside and sophisticated on the inside’ - making it incredibly user-friendly.
