This week the IRC and PY classes began their race from the clubhouse line at Saltash in a race that would take the fleets into Plymouth Sound and then beyond the breakwater to Tinker before a long beat back up river to finish at Saltash. With a strong ebb tide and only a light northwesterly wind to provide a tight spinnaker start both classes got away clear. The wind
was constantly shifting providing plenty of place changes on each leg of the course before a final
tricky light wind beat up river against the tide.
In IRC John Dyer on the First 40.7 Exocet Strike took both line honours and the corrected time win after Neville Davanport’s Musk Ox retired for rounding the first mark the wrong way. Mike Anning concurred the difficult conditions on Revihan after getting away into clear wind at the start and it was another first class eight Mr Shifter belonging to Paul Ormsby in third. Gerry Smith’s Scattered Magic was well placed at the end of the long run to hold on to fourth place on the final beat despite the late challenge of Lingo helmed by Paul Hickling.
In PY Simon Keeble stated out of trouble for both line honours and a two-minute win on corrected time. John Hearl sailed Spellbound single-handed and was placed second ahead of the series leader Dave Hearn on Sea Bee. Six minutes behind Sea Bee in fourth place was Dave Moore’s Hunter Delta Rough Diamond whilst Tony Woodhouse on Flasher rounded off the top five.
The J80 fleet continued their series with two more races both won this week by Peter Wanstall on Jem moving them in to second overall. Angus McPhie still leads the series and scored a fifth and a second on Wave Warrior. It was also another good day for Steve Hills on JSM a second and a fourth puts them in a good position after they missed the first weekend of racing. Daryl Conyers on Oceans Eleven will be trying to halt JSM’s advance Daryl Currently holds on third overall scoring a third and a sixth to retain an advantage over the chasing pack.
With all three classes undecided racing returns to Plymouth Sound next week whilst the sailing club hosts a Topper training event. Live music together with the a vast selection of food and drink will as always be available after racing so make sure you don’t miss out, Its not too late to enjoy a great days sailing and an even better night partying!
