New Yacht Club to open miles from the sea

by Trevor Taylor 31 Dec 2012 06:47 GMT 31 December 2012

A new UK yacht club is being launched about as far as it's possible to get from the sea. Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds is more than 100 miles inland and is famous for being one of the highest points in Oxfordshire. So why create a yacht club on a hill miles from the coast?

"We may be on a hill miles from the sea, lack moorings, have no dinghy park or river frontage but in the Cotswolds there are hundreds of people with a keen interest in boats and sailing." says Trevor Taylor, whose idea it was to form the club. "Many Cotswold locals sail on the south, east and west coasts or overseas but, until now, there's been no local yacht club where those interested in boating can meet without having to embark on a two-hour journey to the Solent or longer to east or west coast ports."

The Chipping Norton Yacht Club (CNYC) will provide an opportunity for the Cotswold sailing community to get together, share experiences, hear interesting speakers, find crew and enjoy social meetings and indulge in general 'scuttlebutt' at the bar.

The club's official launch will be in early 2013 and it is open to all with an interest in boating; sail and power.

The club is in contact with the Royal Yachting Association with a view to affiliate membership and as well as social events the club will organize talks on key topics and provide RYA approved training courses and discounts with selected suppliers.
