International Paints Poole Regatta sponsorship continues

by John Withers 13 Dec 2012 06:24 GMT 24-26 May 2014

It was announced today that International Paints are to continue their sponsorship and association with the Poole Keelboat Regatta.

This confirms the recognition of Poole's importance as a sailing venue by the yachting industry. In terms of numbers of clubs, marinas and boats, Poole is double the size of the Hamble and, unlike the Hamble, Poole is blessed with the superb - virtually tide-free - racing area; Poole Bay.

The event was originally conceived as a celebration of the new millennium in 2000, ever since it has been held biannually on 'even' years and improves year-on-year. International Paint joined forces in 2006 and have been title sponsor ever since. Their support has, and will be, crucial to further developments.

Planning has already started for Poole Regatta 2014, the bay and harbour race areas have been earmarked and having International back on board gives the event the kudos and impetuous to continue to grow and improve.

Organised by The Combined Clubs, the Poole Regatta has gradually increased entry level numbers and quality while other events, such as Cork, have seen numbers decline.

Poole Regatta has been successful in incorporating various National and Southern Region class events and has hosted IRC regional championships alongside local handicap system racing. It has become truly an event for everyone.

In addition to the big Handicap fleets there is One Design racing for J24s, Sonatas, XODs, Flying Fifteens and Shrimpers.

Five separate courses are required; each one with its own dedicated support team of helpers. This army of volunteers 'man' committee boats and mark-laying RIBs, while on-shore teams organise the social programme, serve bacon butties and maintain results.

Social gatherings, receptions, dances and dinners are held at the Royal Motor, Parkstone and Poole Yacht Clubs.

There's a new, updated, website under construction currently but you can follow the events progress at www.pooleregatta.co.uk.
