Enterprise Richard Sadler Memorial Trophy at Ripon Sailing Club

by Ian Smith 12 Nov 2012 20:13 GMT 10 November 2012

Ripon Sailing Club hosted the Richard Sadler Memorial Trophy combined with the Enterprise Cock of the North Winter Championships at Ripon Sailing Club 0n Saturday 10th November.

The morning dawned with blue skies and Ripon looking like a mill pond. Thirteen visitors and five home boats gave this event the largest turnout of the NE events this year with travellers coming from as far Southampton to attend, clearly many wished to pay their respects to the late Richard "Saggy" Sadler who remains greatly missed.

The OOD for the day, Bernard Clark, and his team decided to postpone the start for a while to see what the wind was going to do, following a 90 degree shift in direction and its arrival Race 1 was underway. Matt Velamail and Timber Brownwell showed a clean pair of heels at the windward mark closely followed by Chimp Hobson crewed by Ellie Clark and Martin and Abigail Honnor. There were several changes in position in the sometimes trying conditions but Matt and Timber maintained their lead to finish first with Chimp and Ellie 2nd and Martin and Abigail third.

Following a very filling lunch the fleet was persuaded back on the water and Race 2 was underway in a fairly fluky force 1-2. Chimp and Ellie and Timmy Sadler and Richard Sault managed to get away closely followed by Matt and Timber and James Morley and Rachel Bitkett. Despite some changes of position this order remained the same.

The pressure was mounting for the Ripon guys to show the advantage of sailing on home water in these light conditions as Race 3 began. Andy and Hannah Clark from Ripon made a blinding start, got the shifts right and ended up well ahead at the windward mark as the wind began to die for the day. They were closely followed by Chimp and Ellie, James and Rachel and Martin and Abigail. As the wind died Chimp and Ellie managed to pass Andy and Hannah, Richard and Millie Pryke managed to come through the fleet to finish second with Martin and Abigail third and Andy and Hannah fourth.
