Laser Vago National Championships at Rutland Sailing Club

by Ed Deacon 3 Nov 2012 06:46 GMT 20-21 October 2012

Thirteen Vagos joined the Laser 4000s, 5000s, 2000s and Vortexes at Rutland Sailing Club for their 2012 National Championships, forming the joint largest fleet at the event.

Saturday saw the wind filling in for the first race with Dave Baxters single-hander taking an early lead closely chased by 2 of the Hunts SC club Vagos (recently purchased with help from Sport England) with Tim Lupton and Tim Lachlan Cope followed by Stephen Carver with Thomas Charter with Ed Deacon bringing up 4th position in the chasing pack. All places changed throughout all of races providing some very close competition. During the next 2 races the wind lightened giving the edge to the single-handed boats but the doubled-handers fought back really hard to give the usual good natured and competitive racing.

Sunday started off light, but steadily increased to a stronger breeze getting everyone out on the trapezes and up to speed. Some very enjoyable races featured some exhilarating downwind legs which saw Dave Baxter continued to lead with the chasing fleet changing their positions each lap to make it very interesting.

Well done to Dave Baxter for winning the Vago Nationals, coming in as first single hander for a fourth successive year. Watch out for the newcomers in 3rd and 4th, already making a name for themselves ready for next years competition!
