49ers at London 2012 - Day 6: Outteridge and Jensen 20 points clear

by ISAF 6 Aug 2012 11:09 BST 5 August 2012

Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) extended their lead in the 15-races opening series of the 49er class with two more wins on Sunday, establishing the Australians 20 points ahead of Peter Burling/Blair Tuke (NZL) with just two races to go before Wednesday's Medal Race.

Outteridge and Jensen won the world championship in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 and they further demonstrated their all round ability in Sunday's lighter airs after accomplishing top results in windy conditions earlier in the regatta. Outteridge said, "Today there were no errors and we sailed well. Twenty points is a great lead and we would like to keep it there. It was a great day for us, after the lay day. We posted two bullets, so it doesn't get much better than that."

In the first race on the Weymouth Bay's west course they beat close rivals Peter Burling/Blair Tuke (NZL), who took a second to the Australians in the first race but came 15th in the later contest. A third place and a 13th for Stevie Morrison/Ben Rhodes (GBR) places them in third place overall.

Results after Day 6: (top five, 13 races)

1. Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) - 44pts
2. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) - 64pts
3. Stephen Morrison and Ben Rhodes (GBR) - 90pts
4. Bernardo Freitas and Francisco Andrade (POR) - 93pts
5. Manu Dyen and Stephane Christidis (FRA) - 94pts
