Great Britain lead in two classes at Princess Sofia Regatta

The wind blew in Great Britain’s favour today at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma and after day two, RYA Team GBR lead in two of the Olympic sailing classes and has a podium position in one other.

In the 8-15 knot breezes, Laser sailor Paul Goodison posted race wins in three races and despite being scored as ‘on course side’ (which he is seeking redress for) in the first race of the day, he maintains the overall lead in the class by two points from the 2003 world champion Gustavo Lima from Portugal. Team mate and training partner Mark Howard also sailed a good day in his group and despite a scoring error in race four which should get reinstated, is lying in third place overall.

After an unsuccessful day yesterday waiting for the wind, the 470 classes managed three races today and team GBR sailors Nic Asher and Elliot Willis were quick off the mark. Scoring two fifth places and then winning the final race sees the young pairing take an early lead in the class by two points from French sailors Pallu De La Barriere and Chappellier Aymeric.

In the high performance 49er class Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, who were training partners to Olympic bronze medallists Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks, put in a good start to the regatta and after three races have just six points, which places them second overall and on even scoring with Marcin Czaykowski and Krzysztof Kierkowsky of Poland.

Olympic gold medallist Sarah Ayton, who is finding her feet at the back of the boat helming her first regatta in the Yngling, found form in the final race of the day to score her first race win with team mates Annie Lush and Lisa MacDonald. This result, added to the seventh and tenth that they scored, places them sixth overall just behind team mates Lizzie Edwards, Rachel Howe and Lucy Burn. The Russian team of Ekaterina Skoudina, Diana Krutskikh and Tatiana Larsteva currently lead the class after four races.

Other notable performances include; Charlotte Dobson leading the British charge in the Laser radial class, lying sixth overall; Ed Wright is currently placed fifth in the Finn class; Rob Wilson and Mark Bulkeley are currently placed seventh overall and lead team mates Leigh McMillan and Will Howden by two points in the Tornado class.

Racing continues through until Friday 25 March. Further details on the regatta and full results can be found at www.trofeoprincesasofia.org
