RS500 Worlds and RS200/400 Eurocup at Fraglia Vela Riva - Day 3

by Elena Giolai 25 Jul 2012 21:54 BST 23-27 July 2012

The unstable weather that has been prevalent over the last few days once again brought only light winds today on Trentino Garda. Only one race was completed in the RS Eurocup 200 and 400, for a total of 4 races. Two races, instead were completed for the World RS 500 Championships for a total of 5 races. Today the worst races were thrown out of the classification. The Regatta Committee and the buoy setters from Fraglia Vela Riva had their work cut out for them again today as they tried to set out the standard regatta course in unstable winds that kept shifting direction, at times reaching a short-lived 12 knots.

Tomorrow is the penultimate day of the event and the weather should turn nice. The regular south winds should come back to give a little oomph to this event which up to now has seen conditions more associated with the Adriatic Sea than Trentino Garda! But the RS regatta, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, isn't just about the activities on the water. Last night, at a nearby pub, a mega "Swedish party" took place in which the competitors were able to let their hair down and enjoy themselves!

RS500

Current World Champions Tim Wilkins and Heather Martin hold on to the lead with another 1-2 partial increasing their lead (thanks to discarding the worst race) over Americans Carolyn Howe and Mischa Heemskerk (7-4 today). Climbing to third place is the other British crew of Gregory and Paul Barlett with an excellent 3rd and 1st today. The Italians are also in strong positions with the best being in seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth places headed by Filippo Maccari and Martina Gommellini. The young couple who were at the centre of attention with their marriage proposal on the first day, are in 11th place overall. Today they placed a brilliant 3rd in the last race of the day adding to the 19-18-5 from the first two days.

RS200

In the RS 200 class the discarding of the worst race has not yet been applied since only 4 races have been completed. (It applies from the fifth race) and so the standings are not defined exactly. Saxton-Matthews remain on top with a second today. Climbing into second place overall are Andrew and Jeraldine Peters. Third are Richard and Paru Edwards (6th today). Gullan- Holden placed an excellent first today and with the discarding in place tomorrow, could very well see them bounce into first place (4-3-1 the best partials). The competition in this class is wide open.

RS400

This class has also completed four races so the discarding has not yet been applied. As foreseen yesterday, the crew of Downer-Price has shown they are a force to be reckoned with. In fact today they brought home a coveted win (6-2-2-1) pushing them into first place and tied on points with the other British crew of Stewart and Sarah Robertson (1-3-4-3). Third are Farbrother-Martin and lying forth ready to pounce is George-Kicker (3-1-5-dnc).
