Optimist World Championships in the Dominican Republic - Preview

by Michalis Pateniotis 12 Jul 2012 12:45 BST

In 2012, the Optimist World Championship celebrates its 50th anniversary! Although it was not until 1965 that the IODA was founded, the first Worlds were held in England in 1962 with competitors from Denmark, Sweden and host Great Britain. Today, the Optimist World Championship is one of the most attended sailing events in the world.

The IODA Worlds for 2012 are hosted in the beautiful island of Dominican Republic and more than 50 countries will be there. Optimist is the most popular class four young athletes and the class of tomorrow’s champions. The level at the World Championship is always very high and the young sailors will fight for the top place in both fleet and team racing.

The Championship will start with fleet racing and then the best-qualified teams will fight for the Team Racing world Title!

As in 2011, for second year in a row, Icarus Sailing Media will cover the event and produce daily videos & press releases from the races.
