Scottish Solo Travellers at Newburgh Sailing Club

by Kevan Gibb 2 Jul 2012 14:03 BST 30 June 2012

On Saturday the 30th June the Scottish Solo fleet meet at Newburgh in north Fife for some traditional Tay sailing i.e. tide cheating.

A fleet of nineteen boats came to the start line in race one and Keith Milroy broke clear in the first leg to lead the race from start to finish. Kevan Gibb made a small come back from being buried at the start to get back up to second before doing a classic roll tack and getting stuck under the boom and going swimming dropping him to tenth. Dave Redpath came through to take second and Andrew Hutchinson taking third.

Race two started with the tide nearly at slack water and Katie Masterson lead at the first mark with Keith Milroy working his way to the front and pulled away although Andrew Hutchinson fought hard to reel him in and within the last two legs took the win. Katie Masterson took third.

A short break for refreshments followed and the last race was started with a strong outgoing tide and the spate on top of this meant that local knowledge came to the fore front and knowledge of the local mud bank in the centre of the race course helpful. Kevan Gibb came out of the start with the chance of winning the day lost in his capsize lead the race with Andrew Hutchinson in second enough for him to secure the overall win. Katie again took third in this race.

Newburgh Sailing Club presented the prizes to the top four boats and mid fleet winner being Dave Milroy Jnr in 9th place. Thanks to the club and duty team and rescue boats was expressed in Andy thank you speech.
