Fierce competition
On Saturday 13th May 2012, the Yachting World Dayboat Open came to Bosham Sailing Club. Nineteen boats took to the water in 15-19 knots of wind.
There were three races in the series, with two to count, and, the visitors put up a good show. The courses were set to provide a good beat, a chance to warm up with a run to the gybe mark and a short beat at the end. The wind increased during the course of the event and the Yachting World Dayboats seemed to relish the stronger conditions. The two short races kept the fleet together whilst the longer race gave the front runners the opportunity to power on ahead.
The father and daughter team of Colin and Chrissie Blewett from Poole Y C proved to be a winning combination, closely followed by Peter Hewitt and Chris Lockett also from Poole Y C. These crews proved that knowing your boat is just as important as knowing the waters. Third place was also taken by more visitors, this time by James Davies and Chris Somner of Gravesend Sailing Club, who had got up at 6.00a.m. that morning and travelled from Essex in order to take part in the day's racing.
Fourth place was taken by the first Bosham boat home, sail number 616 helmed by David Edmund-Jones and crewed by Greg Grant and fifth place went to Wendy Davies and crew Roy Davies from Poole Y C.
The visitors were extremely impressed with the organisation of the event and very much enjoyed racing in the lovely harbour setting. The Yachting World Dayboat Association is looking forward to returning to Bosham Sailing Club for more racing events in the near future.
