Yngling Open Springtime Championship at Fraglia Vela Riva - Overall

by Elena Giolai 7 May 2012 09:16 BST 2-5 May 2012

Jamin-Smolders-Berens win

The Dutch crew helmed by Jamin Marten take the Yngling Springtime Championship - the classic Springtime event organised by Fraglia Vela Riva which this year had 30 crews taking part.

With all eight scheduled races completed with medium-strong winds, the enthusiasts of the Yngling class enjoyed four days of great sailing thanks to the generous wind conditions on Trentino Garda. The places on the podium, which had been clearly defined yesterday, were confirmed today with the Dutch crew of Jamin-Smolders-Berens winning by 9 points over Austrians Mayr-Knittel-Spaengler. Third place goes to the other Dutch crew of Deen-Oost-Van der Zee who today came in an excellent 2nd place in the eighth and final race. Austrians Riha-Skolaut-Hofstaetter also gave a brilliant performance today winning the last race giving them 4th place overall.

The next racing date at Fraglia Vela Riva is 17th May for The Riva Cup. This regatta is open to the 505, Korsar and 14' classes and will have participants from Austria, Germany, Switzerland Great Britain, France, Finland and Denmark.

Day 3 Friday 4th

All change at the top: Jamin-Smolders-Berens of The Netherlands take the lead.

It's the third day of competition at the Yngling Open Springtime Championship, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva and which ends tomorrow ( Saturday) 5th May. The weather forecast was true to its word with beautiful sunshine right from the first race ( the 6th of the championship). The consistently intense, southerly winds (20 knots), enabled the Dutch crew, helmed by Jamin Maartin on NED 355, to take over the leadership.

As was seen yesterday, the strong winds confirmed that in these types of conditions, Jamin-Smolders-Berens are in a class of their own. In fact today they had two solid firsts (after the two of yesterday in steady wind conditions) placing them in the lead with a comfortable 8 point advantage over Austrians Mayr-Knittel-Spaengler who were 4th and 7th today and are in second place overall.

The Austrians are literally surrounded by the Dutch with Deen-Oost -Vander Zee on NED 337 6 points behind. Today they were 8th and 2nd and are overall in 3rd place. A good 3rd place was taken by Swiss Gregorini-Pascal-Weibers in the 7th race. Third in regatta 6 was the other Swiss crew helmed by Kristiansen ( 4th overall) and a 2nd partial in regatta 6 for Dutch Jan Kentgens-De leenw-Peulen.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the final day with one race left which will probably not change the positions on the podium. Once again Trentino Garda did not disappoint providing the favourable winds for the competitors to carry out their exciting and demanding regattas.
