Yngling Open Springtime Championship at Fraglia Vela Riva - Day 2

by Elena Giolai 4 May 2012 08:41 BST 2-5 May 2012

It was a beautiful day yesterday on Trentino Garda with sunshine and steady southerly winds for day 2 of The Yngling Springtime Championship, 2012. Three races were completed bringing to a total of 5 out of the 8 scheduled for this edition.

The thirty crews, guests of Fraglia Vela Riva, had an intense afternoon and as the level of competition in this Championship heats up, there is all to play for for a place on the podium. Despite attacks from the Dutch crew of Jamin-Smolders-Berens (3rd last year in the same event),Austrians Mayr-Knittel-Spaengler hold on to the lead (1-9-3 today's partials), even if its only by a single point.

After today's first 2 races the Dutch crew, helmed by Jamin Maarten (1-9 the first partials), were able to overtake but even with today's excellent performance with a fifth and 2 firsts, they were still behind on points after throwing out the worst result. AUT 293 of Rudi Mayr leads with 7 points compared with 8 for Jamin who took advantage of today's strong winds, which reached 20 knots, to win their last two races.

The settled weather forecast until Saturday should guarantee steady winds which would favour Maarten, or will Rudi Mayr be able to stave off the attack and hold on to the lead? Another possibility is that the other Austrian crew AUT 82 of Diem-Hafner-Gebhard could make a move. They are currently in 3rd place, 3 points behind the Dutch. It is definitely too soon to predict the outcome of the Championship.

There was a good performance yesterday from the Swiss crew helmed by Thomas Kristiansen taking 2nd place in the second regatta. They are 6th overall.

Today another day of thrilling regattas on wind-generous Trentino Garda!
