Supernova Open at Cotswold Sailing Club

A wet, blustery and shifty force 3 to 4, greeted 39 enthusiastic sailors at Cotswold Sailing Club's joint Supernova and Lightning Open. Race officer Dave Bevan set a fantastic course for the conditions. After a good feast of bacon butties the 29 Supernovas went first.

Race 1: Steve Hawley was fast out of the port end to build a nice early lead from class chairman Paul Earnshaw. Cliff Milliner and Richard Pakes slowly reeled him in. Hawley and Pakes had their own battle with Pakes taking the race on a photo finish. Gavin Young finished a strong 3rd.

An excellent 3-course lunch was the perfect place for tails of woe all down the fleet.

Race 2: Pakes lead from start to finish, sailing a perfect race to take the CSC Challenge Cup with a race to spare. Young, Milliner and Earnshaw sailed in formation and finished that way. The wind was starting to get the better of some of the fleet and many returned for early tea and cakes.

Race 3: Local sailor Adam Underwood had a perfect port end start to cross the fleet, but the left side paid again, and Pakes, Young, Earnshaw and Gibson rounded the first mark in a gaggle. Order was soon restored as Pakes pulled away from Young and Milliner, with Gibson and Earnshaw having a good battle for 4th.Milliner hauled in Young and these two battled neck and neck with Milliner just taking 2nd.

Good battles and interesting capsizes further down the fleet earned a spread of prizes. A very enjoyable day's sailing was rounded off with a fine array of home-made cakes and buns.
