Firefly Junior Cup at Tamesis Club

by Will Mason 27 Apr 2012 17:34 BST 21 April 2012

Tamesis Club hosted the third running of the Firefly Junior Cup. Eight teams entered despite the forecast and were treated to a sunny and gusty 3 race series. A total of 12, six years old and under competitors some with 2 up in boat took to race one. Carolyne Vines set a simple windward leeward course of 3 laps. Robbie Hudson took a clear lead and held off Finian Morris to the end.

The second race included a race within a race for the juniors to helm. Three boats consisting of Arthur Greaves, Finian Morris and Robbie Hudson pulled away from the pack and battled to the finish with some close quarter manoeuvring. Arthur held of Finian in second and Robbie in third. The battle for the junior helm took a bit longer to complete. With 4 boats with the Juniors helming the majority of the way around. Polly Mason led from Angus and William McEwen with Anna Morris and Nia Mecklenburgh swapping places. Angus and William pulled through to win the Junior helm race.

Race three was all to play for with one of three boats could win. Angus and William McEwen took the lead and never let it go. A good battle was going on for the minor places to decide the overall winner. Robbie was safe in third with Finian and Madeleine/Arthur behind him. Thomas Davey took second and wondered what could have been if his driver had arrived on time!

The competitors retired back for tea and cake ready for the main event on Sunday for the prestigious Elizabeth Cup.

Overall Results:

1st Robbie Hudson
2nd Madeleine and Arthur Greaves
3rd Finian Morris

Junior Helm
1st Angus/William McEwen
2nd Polly Mason
3rd Anna Morris
4th Nia Mecklenburgh
