49er Eurocup at Torbole, Lake Garda Overall

by Neale Fitzgerald 9 Jul 2000 12:07 BST

Lake Garda turned on the usual spectacular conditions for the three day Eurocup event, this year not well attended by the professionals as in previous years. Paul Brotherton and Mo Gray showed the way as expected winning all but one race by good margins. Neale Fitzgerald and Andy Jeffries sponsored by WhyteBikes.co.uk won heat 8 as Paul and Mo swapped jobs, this result along with a second placing in the final race gave the Eastbourne team third overall after a bad start to the regatta. Second place went to Sylvia Vogl the only other full time sailor, this time teaming up with yet anther aussie skiff legend Euan Mcnicol, with Euan calling the shots. As the results show the standard of sailing was not as high in previous years but it allowed al the top ten to score a good result or two which is encouraging for all in the fleet with good racing throughout. The Bits were well represented considering the journey involved for three days racing, but taken as part of a week long break it’s a brilliant venue for some mid season training. As long as the 49er class continues to race at top venues such as Garda the fleet should grow in strength and depth. The boat as a one design is cheap to buy and run, not that difficult to sail and is the best most cost effective way to have fun in dingy sailing/racing.
