505 Europa Cup at Cannes, France

The Easter weekend took the 505 fleet to the South of France venue of Cannes. 60 boats from 8 countries turned up to race in great conditions ranging from 10 knots all the way up to the mid 20's. For the entire time the fleet was afloat the sun shone and the Mediterranean sparkled. The Yacht Club De Cannes did a fantastic job both afloat and ashore in at times quite challenging conditions on the water, always setting spot on courses and making all the right decisions on when to race and not to race.

Seven races were held over 3 days, with three race on Friday. At the end of day one British team of Ian Pinnell and Ian Mitchell had established pole position with good speed and smart tactics, ahead of French team of Xavier Broise and Nicolas Des Jamonieres in second and US team of Mike Holt and Rob Woelfel in 3rd. Day two saw just one race run with the wind building steadily from an initial 12 knots. French team Philipe Boîte and Pierre Jean Gallo pulled off the race win to draw themselves in to contention but the top 3 remained the same.

Day three started with a very light onshore breeze and the AP flying. After a wait of an hour or so the fleet were sent out into a building Southerly breeze with race 5 getting under way in 10 knots. Pinnell and Mitchell tightened their grip on the event with a win, especially as the other leading boats faired less well. Race 6 saw a new team winning a race, German's Morten Bogacki and Lars Dehne winning comfortably from Broise/Des Jamonieres, leaving the French team an outside chance of beating Pinnell/Mitchell in the final, seventh race. However it was not to be for them as Pinnell and Mitchell recorded a third race win, snatching victory on the line from British Team Andy Smith and Tim Needham. Holt and Woelfel's last race 3rd moved them level on points with Broise/Des Jamonieres, but the French teams race win broke the tie break to keep them in 2nd overall, the American team in 3rd.
