New 3.7 kits available!

by Daryl Wilkinson 25 Feb 2012 18:23 GMT Stand B52, 3-4 March 2012

The 3.7 class is proud to announce the availability of a Farr 3.7 Kit. Supplied by New Zealand Boatbuilding Company, Howden Boatbuilders Ltd., the kit comprises of the boat's frames pre-cut with frame strengtheners glued in place and the main girder. The main girder is supplied pre-cut but not glued together due to its final constructed size increasing the import costs. The kit effectively removes all the hard and fiddly lofting and cutting out of the boats skeleton. Ounce positioned on your jig they provide you with the base to skin the boat with sheets of ply. Cutting the build time enormously and increasing accuracy.

This is what Andrew Howden said; "The prices are as follows; frames constructed ready to stand up on the building jig with all doublers attached; $1135.67 (£595) (excluding GST which would not be applicable outside of NZ). Because of the length of the girder, and transport logistics it would be best to purchase that in cut out form and assemble it on site, that would be $320.00 (£167) (excluding GST).

My suggestion would be to purchase the Gaboon ply (4 sheets of 4mm and 1 sheet 3mm for the deck) and a suitable lightweight timber for the gunwale, chines, stringers etc plus glues, and fastenings in the UK to make it cost efficient for you. Price does not include Freight to the UK as depending on the sizes and weight of the package being sent an accurate price can not be determined at this time.

* GBP figures are rough exchange rate calculations at 24/02/12 exchange rates - the actual costs will be determined by the rate at the time of purchase and the method used

These kits offer the slightly hesitant or novice builder a real head start. Removing the major worriers of good wood choice and accurate frame gutting. Combining this kit with Bruce Farr's excellent plans, which provide all the detail you need, even including how to build your jig. Provides a great option to get on the water for low cost and fun sailing. For more information come and chat at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show - the 3.7 can be found at the Spinlock Stand (B52).
