Mirror Open at Ullswater Yacht Club

by Eddie Grayson 4 Oct 2011 09:46 BST 1 October 2011

25 Mirrors arrived to a beautiful sunny day at Ullswater, the high turnout due to the open meeting being combined with the RYA national squads selection event with crews travelling from as far away as Penzance. The club made us feel very welcome and the race officer provided a very good briefing, however there was no wind at the scheduled race start of 11.00 leading to a postponement until 1pm.

Race 1 got underway with Kate Davies & Gemma Keers taking the lead at the windward Mark, follow by Tom Cosier & Niamh O'Neill, after a number of place changes Sarah Richards sailing single handed took the lead to win the race. Race 2 started, after one general recall due to the starboard bias start line, John Hugo led the fleet to the windward mark and to the wing mark but unfortunately capsized on the gybe mark, allowing Milly & Nick Pugh to take the lead. By the leeward mark Richards had taken the lead going on to take line honours, follow by Emma Grayson also sailing singlehanded, and Pugh & Pugh in third place.

The wind had died a little for race 3 and shifted 20 degrees right. The race was started with a very starboard bias startling line and a fetch to the windward Mark. The wind died away to virtually nothing on the first reach and shifted so the fleet then had to beat to the wing mark Richards had sailed high on the reach and managed to sail over Cosier & O'Neill and Scott & Adam Bromley. The Race Officer wisely decided to finish the race at the wing mark with Richards in first place Will Hide & Emma Clayton just beating the Bromley brothers across the line with Cosier & O'Neill in fourth place.

Overall Results:

1st Sarah Richards
2nd Tom Cosier & Niamh O'Neill
3rd Milly Pugh & Nick Pugh
4th Katie Davies & Gemma Keers
