Tasar Worlds at Royal Torbay Yacht Club - Overall

by Pete Ellis 25 Sep 2011 21:04 BST 16-23 September 2011

56 teams travelled to the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, UK, to compete in the 2011 Tasar World Championships. With containers arriving from Australia and Japan, and charter boats for competitors from Ireland, Canada and USA along with the European competitors this was always going to be a Worlds with an international feel to it.

One and a half days of measuring was followed by the practice race. This was won by a long way by Craig Mcphee and Gill Berry from Australia. An opening ceremony with a traditional Commodores Reception followed that evening.

12 Races were to be sailed over the following 6 days. A lay day was also planned in the middle of this event. The first three days saw 3 races a day in varying winds. The first day was sailed in what felt like the windiest conditions for the week. With the race team suggesting that gusts didn’t get above the 30 knot limit leading some competitors to suggest that the wind measurement device needed a bit of WD40 to get it working properly! The second day saw lighter winds with a shifting breeze. The breeze returned for the third day of racing.

By the end of the third day and 9 races in a pattern was starting to show. The local boat of Malcolm and Fiona Davies were unstoppable in the lighter breeze, but got blown away when the wind was in. Australians Rob and Nicole Douglas were very fast in the stronger winds but were struggling in the lighter wind. Fellow Australians Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway were sailing fast in all conditions. Craig Mcphee and Gill Berry were also pushing hard over the three days.

At the layday there was a three way push the Championship between the three Australian boats. Further down the fleet all areas were very close with minimal point differences.

A two race penultimate day in light winds made things a little bit clearer. Again the Davies were the top team in the conditions, the Ridgways sailed the Douglass’s down the fleet in the 2nd race of the race to give them a light edge before the final days deciding race.

The final race was sailed in a shifting breeze. The RIdgways came home victorious to be the first Victorian boat and the first winner of the UK National Championships to be crowned World Champions. Rob and Nicole Douglas finished 2nd with Malcolm and Fiona Davies finishing in third ahead of Craig Mcphee and Gill Berry. Other notable results in the fleet were that Japanese sailors of Hiroaki Sato and Yasuaki Muragishi finished 5th, 1986 World Champion Rick Longbottom sailing with Darryl Bentley finished in 6th with Canadians Thilo Giese and Sandra Towers in 7th.

Other World Champions crowned were Junior Angus Galloway, Lady of Bronwyn Ridgway, Master Malcolm and Fiona Davies, Grandmaster Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway and Supergrandmaster of Tijn Udo and Jan Slotemaker.

These World Championships were not only about the sailing though. Royal Torbay Yacht Club along with the UK Tasar Association gave all competitors an event to remember. A traditional Commodores reception opened the event, evening meals were provided at the Yacht Club along with a pre layday function at the welcoming Babbacombe Corinthian Yacht Club. The closing ceremony was a 3 course meal at the local Imperial Hotel. The RTYC’s professional reputation was proved to be justified as they were world class both on and off the water.

As competitors from around the World head home with fond memories they will now start thinking of what could have been, of the friends made in the bar and of how to improve before the next Worlds to be held at Cascade Locks in August 2013. Whilst the Australians were on top at this event, the Japanese and UK fleets are catching up, as well as a few North Americans and Canadians looking to gain the title at the next opportunity.
