Bassweek Regatta at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club - Day 3

by Mik Chappell 2 Aug 2011 07:00 BST 30 July - 7 August 2011

Monday morning is traditionally recovery time after the efforts put in to gain top results in the first weekend series. RYA training takes place and a single race with its own prizes is held in the afternoon. This is The Luffing Cup which has been sponsored in recent years by Bassenthwaite Lakeside Lodges.

The morning rain stopped in time for the 1430 hours start and the Fast Handicap fleet took the first of eight class or fleet starts in light westerly winds. Some competitors had taken the opportunity of switching boats or crews in this somewhat less competitive race (for some, if not for others!) and the Family Regatta handle came into play with a number of very young crews being taken on the water.

Unlike the weekend's races, this one was held in Dubwath Bay at the Northern end of the Lake and it could easily be viewed from the Clubhouse. But, as the non competing ladies were engaged in a Tea and Cocktails afternoon, numbers viewing the racing were somewhat limited!

There wasn't much action to view in any case as the wind gradually dropped away until, after two laps for the faster boats and one for the slowest, it died to a vesper and the Race Officer made the decision to shorten course at the central clubhouse mark. There a three of these marks in a line to allow numbers to be seen from the race office. With dozens of boats drifting in and not able to tack for the line, the finishing order became something of a lottery: for the Flying Fifteens, Mirrors and Toppers in particular. But others were still on distant legs and one boat took nearly three hours of perseverance to record a finish.

Full results can be found at www.bassenthwaite-sc.org.uk and a summary of the lead positions in each class is shown below.
