Cadet World Championships at Kuhlungsborn, Germany - Day 1

by David Elliott 31 Jul 2011 10:55 BST 30 July - 5 August 2011

After the first day’s racing teams from GBR lead both the Rugen Fisch Cadet World Championships and the Hanse Youngster Cadet Promotional Regatta.

133 teams from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain and the Ukraine have entered this year’s competitions, which are being held in Kuhlungsborn, Germany until 5th August 2011. 12 races are scheduled for each event with discards kicking in with completion of the fourth and eighth races.

Friday’s Practice Race was lost to heavy seas and teams launched on Saturday with only limited experience of the course, which comprised a triangle followed by a windward-leeward lap with a short beat to the finish. Three races were scheduled for the World Championship teams, but only two were sailed as a combination of wind and sea made the conditions difficult and saw the fleet ashore by early afternoon.

Race 1 saw Australian and Russian teams challenging for the lead until errors approaching the finish saw Maciej Kaminski & Szymon Ostrowski in POL 9755 take the gun, followed by Ben Hazeldine & George Bridge sailing GBR 9047 Touchwood and Oleksandr Izarov & Andriy Kalinchuk in UKR 9251. Anton & Julian Sasson in AUS 5509 Samaran were fourth, Santiago Ureta & Tomas Peluso in ARG 9479 fifth and Andrew Smith & Rory Burdock sixth in GBR 9243 Blue String Pudding.

Race 2 saw Andrew & Rory lead the early stages followed by Ilya Polyschuk & Ilya Gaydaenko in RUS 9811, Gergo Boros & Balazs Horvath in HUN 9557 and Ben & George. Ilya & Ilya made the best of the run to the leeward mark and they led up the second beat followed by Gergo & Balazs. Rounding the second windward, the Russians capsized leaving Gergo & Balazs to lead the fleet home, followed by Andrew & Rory and Ben & George. Dawid Kania & Kacper Madon in POL 9512 were fourth, Jonathan & Thomas Cooper in AUS 5758 Wild Thing, fifth and Cameron Philcox & Cody Groat sixth in AUS 9777 X-T Sea.

Ben & George lead overnight with 5 points, followed by Andrew & Rory with 8 and Anton & Julian on 12.

GBR teams dominated the first day of the Hanse Youngster Promotional Regatta, filling all six podium places in the two races sailed. With two victories to their credit, Mary Henderson & Lulu Knott sailing GBR 8561 Bad Influence head the leaderboard, followed by Nick Sutton & Aqil Jannaty in GBR 8844 Nasty Tern on 5 points, with Amir & Aliya Jannaty in GBR 9319 third on 7 points.

Race 1 saw Mary & Lulu build-up a useful lead by the first windward, which they developed as the race progressed. Nick & Aqil traded second and third places with Jack Wilson & Ryan Wilkinson sailing GBR 735 Pintail with the former taking the runners-up place. Anna Oczkowska & Patrycja Galazka in POL 9847 took fourth, with Amir & Aliya Jannaty in GBR 9319 fifth and host nation sailors Anna Chudzik & Luisa Allwardt sixth in GER 9346 Gizmo der Mogwai.

Despite Nick & Aqil making the most of a port-end flyer, Mary & Lulu led at the windward in Race 2. Amir & Aliya then took the lead before capsizing, leaving Mary & Lulu to take victory by a substantial margin. Amir & Aliya recovered well to take second, with Nick & Aqil third. Jules Greeve & Victor de Rispaimsel sailing BEL 8519 Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster finished in fourth place, Oliver Palierakis & Robert Keen in GBR 7495 Salt Air were fifth with Annie Knott & Eve Bottalico sixth in GBR 8432 Trident.
