Talisker RS Elite Nationals at Royal Forth Yacht Club Day 3

by RS Sailing 23 Jul 2011 22:22 BST 21-24 July 2011

More light (at times desperately light) breeze today at the Royal Forth YC for the Talisker RS Elite Championships and some real shake-ups for the leading crews desperately working on building consistent series.

With some huge shifts, large holes and big scores you really would not have thought that the top three on the leaderboard would be the same tonight, albeit with the points gap significantly reduced.

Best score of the day went to Simon Brien in Kin with 9, 2, 1 ahead of RSsailing.com with 8,1,5 and Brien’s brother Mark in Full Marks with 3, 9,2. Adding to the Irish rush here on Day 3, Geoff Ralston’s Upfront was the winner of the first race.

Overall it is now very tight at the top and sets things up perfectly for a showdown last race tomorrow. The Brown’s in Aeolus blew their discards in the first two races today but they still lead on 27 points, just one ahead of Wadhams in RSsailing.com who are another 2 points ahead of the Macleans in Elixir.

All three have won two races each, but while RSsailing.com has been more consistent and is the only boat in the fleet not to have strayed into double figures, that means the other two stand to either shed more points when the second discard kicks in – or blow their championship hopes if they get another big score in the final race.

The forecast is for more of the same and that means anything could happen.

Current placings after 8 races

1st GBR33 Aeolus, Jono Brown, 27pts
2nd GBR55 RSsailing.com, Martin Wadhams, 28pts
3rd 11 Elixir, Shaun Maclean, 30pts
4th IRL50 Sea Breezes, John McDowell, 33pts
5th IRL 61 Kin, Simon Brien, 35pts
6th GBR82 Livez, Simon Cavey, 53pts
